The Giver by Lois Lowery #3

The book I recently finished with my book club was The Giver by Lois Lowery. In my last blog post I predicted that Gabe would be able to see beyond. I was right Jonas transmits memories to Gabe when he is having trouble sleeping. Since my last post a lot has happened. Jonas learned that Release from the community is actually death.  He also made a plan with the Giver to give the community emotions and colors. Now I will tell you a little more about their plan.
If the Receiver of Memories dies or leaves they community then the memories they have will be sent out into the community.  The Giver knows this because when the past Receiver was released from the Community all of the memories she had were sent out into the Community. They decide that Jonas will travel by night out of the Community and once he is far enough away from the Community the memoires will start to come back. The Giver will be there to help the people through the process of learning with the memories. They decided to do this because they want the people the community to experience the same things that was experienced before Sameness.
Overall I really love this book and how it addresses the fact that we cant all be the same. If everybody is the same than life gets boring. Also people cant make all of are decisions for us we need to be able to express are feelings and emotions through choices we make. We need to be able to express ourselves in life.

The Giver by Lois Lowery #2

The book that I am reading with my book club is The Giver by Lois Lowery. In my last blog post I left off right before Jonas received his assignment. Jonas received the assignment of Receiver Of Memory. His job is to collect memories from before Sameness and use them to advise the Elders.  In the story a baby by the name of Gabe lives with Jonas and his family unit because he needs extra nurturing. I believe that Gabe has the same gift as Jonas.
The gift the Jonas posses is the gift to receive memories. I believe this because Lois Lowery explains how Gabe has the same light eyes that Jonas has. The Giver also has these light eyes, which makes me think that they are probably a trait of people who can see beyond. The light eyes allow these people to see color. In the beginning of the story Jonas says that an apple changed but he can’t explain how. Later we learn that Jonas saw the apple turn red. Gabe, Jonas, The Giver and a few other members in the community have the ability to see color. I think that Gabe has the ability to see beyond.
Overall I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is interesting, engaging and overall an amazing book.

The Giver by Lois Lowery

The book that I am currently reading is The Giver by Lois Lowery. I have just started reading the book so not a lot has happened. So far in the book we have met the protagonist Jonas and his family. We have also learned about life in the community and how organized and proper it is. Now I’m going to tell you a little more about life in the community.
During your life from zero to one you stay in the Nurturing Center and develop and grow under the love and care of the Nurturers.  Then once you become a One you are assigned to a group who are your playmates and your friends and who you grow up with until you become a Twelve and go your separate ways.
When you become a One, you have your first ceremony.  Every year in December the whole community gets together to celebrate how all the children have matured. Every year the children are given something to show how they have grown.  At the Ceremony of One, you receive your name and are given to a family unit.  At the Ceremony of Nine you are given your bicycle. The Ceremony of Twelve is the most important ceremony of all.  At the Ceremony of Twelve you are given your Assignment.  Your Assignment is basically your job for the rest of your life.  The Elders watch you throughout your life and decide what Assignment they believe is best for you.  I don’t know what Assignment Jonas has gotten yet but I will tell you in my next blog post.
Overall I really like The Giver and highly recommend it to everybody.

Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers

The book that I have recently finished is Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers. This book is about a nanny-Mary Poppins- who takes care of Jane and Michael Banks. Mary Poppins has a certain type of mystical magic around her. The book is broken up into short stories but all of them involve the characters. Mary Poppins is magical.
One example if this is in the short story “Full Moon”. In this story Jane and Michael are suddenly awaken by a strange voice that leads them to the zoo in the middle of the night. When they arrive there they find all the animals out of their cages and walking around and talking. They also find humans in cages. Basically the animals and the humans switch places. Jane and Michael also hear animals talking about someone’s birthday. Some how they find themselves in they reptile house and Mary Poppins is there. The birthday girl everyone is talking about is Mary Poppins! The next morning Jane and Michael think that it must be a dream but then they see Mary Poppins were a snakeskin belt that says “A present from the zoo”. Now it can’t possible be a dream.
Overall Mary Poppins is magic because she had a birthday party and the zoo in the middle of the night with the animals talking and running around freely. Only a person who is magical and imaginative could do this. I highly recommend this book.

Girls Best Friend by Leslie Margolis

The book that I have recently read is Girls Best Friend by Leslie Margolis. This book is about a young girl growing up in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Maggie is a dog walker and she helps solve the mystery of the missing dogs. Maggie notices things that normal people don’t she notices and remembers things. Overall I really like the book. One thing that stood out to me was the setting. The author lives in Park Slope so she includes places that I know and visit often.
One example of this is “Beastly Bites” a pet store that used to be on 7th avenue. Maggie goes in there to buy a treat for Preston a dog that she walks. Another example is Prospect Park. Maggie and her twin brother Finn play soccer in the park and Maggie also walks dogs in the park. The author also describes the loins that guard the 3rd street entrance to the park. These loins make Maggie feel safe because then believes that they are watching over her. Finally they descried Garfield the street where Maggie lives. Garfield is a real street in Park Slope. This is some of the setting that is in the book.
I really liked this book because of the plot but also the setting. I felt a connection to Maggie because be both have grown up in the same neighborhood with the same places. I highly recommend this book.
